The Long View No. 36 “What Wise Leaders Do Before They Decide”

Most people think leadership is about making good decisions.

Wise leaders know something else comes first.

They slow down long enough to discern what kind of decision this actually is.

I have watched leaders rush toward answers only to realize later they skipped the most important work. Understanding what is really being asked of them. Is this a strategic decision, a relational one, or a values decision? Each requires a different posture.

Wise leaders pause not because they are uncertain, but because they are attentive.

They listen for what feels settled.

They notice where resistance lives.

They ask what will bring life, not just relief.

Before your next decision, what would change if you slowed down just enough to listen for what kind of decision it truly is?
