Why Walking With People Matters More Than Tracking Them

When I sit with leaders, there is often a moment, subtle and almost unplanned, when the deeper truth finally surfaces. It rarely sounds dramatic. It usually comes out quietly, almost apologetically.

I am tired of carrying this alone. I do not know who I can talk to about this. I cannot ask my staff. I cannot ask my board. I am running out of energy to both hold the work and lead the people.

Artificial intelligence can answer questions, but it cannot absorb burden. It cannot hear the exhaustion between sentences or notice the toll leadership has taken on someone’s inner life. It cannot witness the cost of being the one who always has to be composed.

Listening, when it is done with patience and without agenda, exposes a gap leaders often hide. The gap between who they are expected to be publicly and how they actually feel privately.

When that gap is named without judgment, accountability begins to change shape. It stops feeling like surveillance and starts feeling like care.

The Kind of Clarity That Actually Helps

Once the real story is on the table, clarity begins to change. Not clarity about tasks or metrics. Those are usually already known. What emerges instead is clarity about what has been getting in the way.

Artificial intelligence can detect patterns and sentiment. It cannot discern sources of stuckness. That kind of discernment requires proximity, someone close enough to see beneath competence and composure.

That's the type of work I do with leaders. And I LOVE it.

The work shifts away from interrogation and toward curiosity. Instead of asking, did you do the thing, the questions become quieter and more honest.

What helped this week? What made it harder than expected? What needs to be adjusted so the work can actually continue?

Small rhythms begin to matter. Brief check ins that respect attention rather than consume it. Commitments sized to reality instead of aspiration. Reflection that makes room for learning, not performance.

Before, accountability sounded like anxiety. Now, it sounds like conversation and HOPE.

This is where the contrast between automation and accompaniment becomes clear. Systems are very good at measuring behavior. People are better at nurturing belief. Systems track consistency. People help the work matter.

Then we begin to understand, that through accountability, alignment grows where safety grows.

What Walking With Actually Looks Like

Over time, accountability becomes something you can feel.

Leaders stop gripping progress with white knuckles. They stop hiding the parts of leadership that feel tired or uncertain. They stop performing clarity and start practicing it in real time, with real people.

Momentum returns slowly. Not from pressure, but from shared courage. Not from being watched, but from being accompanied.
